LIS 6271
a. Students are able to evaluate critically, reflect, and problem solve individually as well as collaboratively.
To complete this project, my group and I reviewed feedback from earlier stages of the assignment and reflected on areas that needed improvement. We worked together to revise the presentation so that it addressed weaknesses in our initial proposal and clarified our research goals. This process required us to think critically about our work and collaborate to solve problems that emerged throughout the semester.
b. Students demonstrate effective communication skills.
I contributed to the development of a presentation that summarized our research proposal in a clear and organized way. We focused on presenting our ideas in language that an academic audience could easily understand while also highlighting the significance of our research questions and methods.
c. Students participate in professional and community engagement activities in the field.
By presenting our research proposal in an academic setting, we engaged with practices that mirror professional communication in the library and information field. The project required us to share our work with others, respond to feedback, and consider how our research connects to broader conversations in the discipline.
d. Students demonstrate leadership skills and innovation in a diverse and global environment.
Working as part of a collaborative team required us to divide responsibilities, support one another’s ideas, and adapt our approach when challenges arose. Through this process, we practiced leadership and innovation by combining our different perspectives to produce a cohesive and thoughtful final presentation.
LIS 6409
a. Students are able to evaluate critically, reflect, and problem solve individually as well as collaboratively.
In this assignment, I analyzed a job posting and developed a series of behavioral and knowledge based interview questions that aligned with the position’s requirements. I evaluated what skills and experiences the role required and created questions that would help assess whether a candidate could meet those expectations.
b. Students demonstrate effective communication skills.
I designed the interview questions to encourage clear and open conversation with candidates. The questions aimed to prompt thoughtful responses while creating a communicative and inviting interview environment that allowed candidates to describe their experiences and qualifications in detail.
c. Students participate in professional and community engagement activities in the field.
This activity reflects a common professional responsibility in library and information settings, where staff often participate in hiring and evaluation processes. Developing interview questions allowed me to engage with a realistic professional task and consider how hiring practices support the growth and effectiveness of an organization.
d. Students demonstrate leadership skills and innovation in a diverse and global environment.
By creating questions that assessed both technical knowledge and interpersonal skills, I considered how candidates might contribute to a collaborative and inclusive workplace. This approach reflects leadership in hiring practices by prioritizing thoughtful evaluation and creating space for diverse experiences and perspectives.
LIS 5937 - Community Engagement
a. Students are able to evaluate critically, reflect, and problem solve individually as well as collaboratively.
Through participation in two different community group events, I evaluated how each organization’s goals and activities might align with potential programming or partnerships at a public library. This required me to reflect on the needs of both the library and the community groups and consider how collaboration could support shared objectives.
b. Students demonstrate effective communication skills.
During these events, I communicated with community members and organizers to learn more about their missions and the services they provide. These conversations helped me practice professional communication while gathering information about how libraries can work with community partners.
c. Students participate in professional and community engagement activities in the field.
Attending these events allowed me to engage directly with local organizations and observe how community groups operate outside of the library environment. This experience reflects the type of outreach and relationship building that librarians often undertake to strengthen connections between libraries and the communities they serve.
d. Students demonstrate leadership skills and innovation in a diverse and global environment.
By exploring opportunities for collaboration between the library and community groups, I considered ways that libraries can expand services and programming through partnerships. This experience helped me develop leadership skills by thinking strategically about how libraries can support diverse community needs through cooperative efforts.
